Enjoy a magical Christmas in Zürich
Zürich really does make an excellent Christmas city. The old town is straight out of an Advent calendar and the skies above Bahnhofstrasse twinkle with Christmas lights. Discover Zürich in your running shoes this Christmas by taking part in the traditional Silvesterlauf along the River Limmat and through downtown Zürich. Adults can choose from routes that are 6.3km or 9.8km long, while children can try running the 1.5km or 2.7km routes.
Illuminarium Light Festival
This year, for the first time, Zürich’s castle-like Landesmuseum will be transformed into a fairytale winter landscape with spectacular 3D light projections and installations, music and food. The Illuminarium light festival takes place in the museum’s courtyard and is free to attend.

Christmas market at the Hauptbahnhof
There’s a Christmas atmosphere of Disney proportions at the Christkindlimarkt at Zürich’s train station, where 150 stands covered in artificial snow sell everything from Christmas decorations, lamps and glühwein to home-knitted caps, all underneath a 15m-tall Christmas tree decorated with thousands of Swarovski crystals.Remember to bring cash.

There’s plenty of atmosphere at the beautiful pavilion at Bürkliplatz, where this year, for the 49th time, they’ll be lighting the fire under the big pot of liquid beeswax. Here, children can slowly dip their long wicks into the warm wax and see how, dip by dip, it becomes thicker and thicker and finally becomes a real candle that they can take home with them. A lovely experience, even if you don’t speak a word of German.

Christmas market at the Opera House
The Christmas stalls at Sechseläutenplatz sell food, glühwein, Christmas decorations and all manner of other delights. You can certainly feel the kitsch, but once darkness falls and the lights come on, it becomes a lot more charming. There’s also a great ice rink, as well as Christmas trees for sale. Remember to bring cash.

Heiliger Bimbam Christmas market
The Christmas market where you are actually tempted to buy some gifts – not least for yourself!On the weekend before Christmas, the city’s leading creatives come here to sell pictures, jewelry, recycled goods and a whole lot more, all of their own design. There’s a fantastic range on offer, while DJs provide good vibes and street food trucks satisfy the hungry. Remember, bring cash.

Buy some chestnuts
December is roasted chestnut time in Zürich and stalls selling “Heisse Marroni” are strategically positioned all around the city to tempt passers-by. The roasted chestnuts taste fantastic and will warm you up on a cold walk.
The bright-red circus top out on the water brings a marvelous, old-school Christmas charm to downtown Zürich every year. Conelli is an authentic circus with performers from all over the world and lots of breathtaking acrobatics. The Christmas show is a major attraction every year and an impressive experience for children and adults alike. Book your ticket well in advance.
