The new Nørrebro
Not so long ago, Nørrebro was mostly synonymous with anti-establishment groups such as de autonome and Ungdomshuset. The neighborhood has also been home to ghettos, gang warfare, and failed integration projects. But Nørrebro has many faces. It is an area undergoing constant development, and new green spaces, playgrounds, Superkilen park, and a green cycle path through the district have given the neighborhood a new lease of life. Urban entrepreneurs have enhanced and improved Nørrebro so that it now conjures up images of urban gardens, bearded hipsters, and porridge bars, rather than troublemakers and arsonists. Nørrebro has become smarter and nicer, but still has its “brown bodegas” and kebab shops, and enough edge to retain its character. Here is our guide to great places to hang out in Nørrebro:
Places & Parks

Assistens Cemetery
Hanging out in a graveyard may not sound much fun, but Assistens Cemetery is also one of the neighborhood’s most beautiful parks, and is very popular with joggers, sunbathers, and latte- drinking parents pushing strollers. Famous Danes buried here include Søren Kierkegaard, H.C. Andersen, and rap star Natasja.

Cafés:
Coffee is Nørrebro’s signature drink, and there are myriad cafés selling the black nectar. Sankt Hans Torv, Elmegade, and Guldbergsgade are home to classic Nørrebro establishments such as Sebastopol, Pussy Galore, and Laundromat Café. They are still good, but lots of other interesting small places have sprung up in other parts of the district:

Røde Roses Kaffebar
Atmospheric café with enticing cozy nooks, old records, and homemade chai. A welcome hideaway on a cold day.

Vi mødtes gennem ruden
Heimdalsgade is a little outside the main café zone, but that hasn’t hampered Vi mødtes gennem ruden. Two young firebrands are in charge and they know exactly how to roast coffee, make a latte, and furnish a room so that you will want to come back – as early as tomorrow. Try their avocado served with mixed nuts and herbs on toasted rye bread.

Props Coffeeshop
As one of the pioneers of Nørrebro’s retro-chic café scene, this place is hardly new, but it still has the hip factor. If you love their style, you can even buy the furniture to take home with you – everything is recycled and everything is for sale.

Coffee Collective
Jægersborggade is the home of young urban creatives, and is also, of course, the place where Coffee Collective launched its successful coffee roastery and bar business. The original is still there and coffee drinking there is still a way of life.
