Ask SAS: Will you add new planes to the fleet?

This month, SAS Executive Vice President Lars Sandahl answers your questions about the new fleet and upgrades onboard.

Can we expect to see new planes added to the fleet?
As an airline, it is essential that we continually look at how we can improve, both for the sake of our travelers and the environment. Part of this process began in 2016 with the delivery of the first of 30 Airbus A320neos that will be introduced on a rolling basis until 2019. By using the latest technology we can offer a more comfortable, less noisy, passenger experience, which is more environmentally friendly and significantly improves our fuel economy. We also recently ordered 50 more A320neos for delivery between 2019 and 2023. The order is for 35 planes from Airbus and 15 for leasing.

I recently flew on one of the newly re-fitted aircraft in the fleet and was thankful for the USB port in my seat. On my way back I didn’t have one. Does SAS have plans to re-fit all the planes in the fleet?

Alongside new planes, we’re also upgrading our cabins on intercontinental routes. Regardless of the class you are traveling in, you’ll notice the difference, be it new seats, on-demand entertainment systems, fully flat beds in SAS Business, added connectivity and many other aspects including the USB outlets you have already enjoyed.

I understand that SAS will soon be launching WiFi onboard. Will it be for short- and long-haul destinations?
We are in the process of launching WiFi on much of our short-haul fleet and look forward to offer the best and fastest solution available on the market. Then we will listen to customers’ feedback and experiences onboard when they are streaming their favorite TV shows, checking their emails or taking pictures from the airplane on social media.

Inflight dining has improved so much over the past year or so. Do you have different menus in winter and summer?
Again, we aim to make your journey as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Our New Nordic food concept has been extremely successful since its launch last year, but we are constantly looking at how to improve. Part of this involves changing the menu on offer. From this month, you’ll see plenty of changes and hopefully many things to delight your tastebuds.
